PARKS STATUS REPORT
Cathy Baker-Eclipse expects work
on the parks for this season to be completed by Thanksgiving
since all underground work has been done and loam
is already being spread to the finish height of the
future lawns.
The new benches have been delivered
but not yet installed. The brick paving for the paths
and for the central plazas around the fountains will
be installed this week, and it is expected that the
pie-shaped pieces of granite that will line the bottom
of the central fountains will also be installed by
the time of the CSANA monthly meeting.
Since the absolute end of planting
time is somewhere between the middle of November and
the middle of December, Cathy believes that the bushes
for the parks and the eight flowering trees on each
side will also be planted before work ends this fall.
However, the cold would prevent grass seed from germinating
and it is clear that no flowers or lawn seed will
be planted until next spring, when the ribbon cutting
and formal opening will be scheduled.
The signs that outline required
park behavior will be moved from their present location
high up on some of the lights in the parks and attached
to the fences near each of the entrances to the parks.
The signs identifying these as Chester Square parks
will be placed beside the main, central entrance to
each park.
The wrought iron fountains have
been installed. They are three-tier Victorian style
fountains and have twin swans at the base. They seem
to echo the vertical look of the original Chester
Square fountain of the 1860's. The elaborate mechanisms
that control the fountains' flow are underground,
but access places to service and manage the fountains'
water supply are very visible at one side of each
fountain. They will remain visible even after the
land is graded but Cathy noted that shrubbery to be
planted nearby will mask at least some of the brown
plastic and green metal.

MASS AVE RECONSTRUCTION
UPDATE
Para Jayasinghe of the DPW has reported
that the project funds have been secured, the contract
books are complete and bids on the project will be
opened in November or December. Work is tentatively
expected to start on the reconstruction of the street
in the spring.
